[9fans] Plan 9 ``propaganda server'' back on line

So I'm down with a fever today—really—and Glenda appeared to me in my
fitful dreams and shared its true inner thoughts about the the Earth's
inhabitants. It's single poigniant utterance was singularly pithy,
and seemed to ring true on some cosmic level. For just a moment, I
was at peace, and elevated—I believe—to that higher plane of
consciousness from which Plan 9 must have first emerged. I thought it
might make a good slogan, so I slammed together another poster/flyer
(with appoligies to Stanley Kubrick this time).

Enjoy.

There are, I had to pull them down because I was in danger of
over-running my bandwidth quota, and after the server failure
yesterday I didn't want any more problems. Since they are editable
PDFs, they are large files (the whole package is over 50M). I admit I
completely underestimated the level of interest. I'm working out the
best way of distributing them.

Good question, I think it originally did. Some early feedback I
received was generally of the opinion that space glenda is
``cooler''. I don't quite agree, but it did bias my
thinking a bit as I progressed.

Of course, the whole point of releasing editable PDFs was so that
people could adapt these things to their own purposes and make changes
they thought were appropriate. One obvious need is for versions formatted
for A4 paper stock, rather than just 8½ x 11. Its a little
complicated because some of these layouts bleed off the page and
everything has to be adjusted. I'm happy to do it, but I wanted to
see if there was interest first.

The full-size PDFs are back on the site.

They are linked to files on the 9atom servers where Erik has
generously offered to host them to circumvent my immediate bandwidth
constraints. Thanks Erik!

I have just a couple remarks. These are editable PDFs (all layers
preserved, etc.). If anyone wishes to make their own changes feel
free. I appreciate that all members of this list may not have (or
want) access to the ponderous and preponderant Adobe beasts through
which these where wrought. So if you would like changes for a special
purpose (adaptation for A4 print stock, removal of the ink bleed,
addition of printer's marks, etc.) and don't have the means, let me
know and I'll do what I can.

Lastly, there is intentionally no PDF for ``All You of Earth...'' this is a very
recent addition and really just a draft.

Good work and funny; BTW, the server is down again.

I challenge you to come up with a couple more, perhaps around quotes
by Plan 9 creators (a recent one by Presotto comes to mind)

That's clever. I wanted to do something with Kit-Cat from the start;
the best I could manage was to put it on the bulkhead of the flying
saucer in the movie poster. I think it has potential as an adjunct
mascot—though there might be copyright issues if it is featured to
prominently. (Something fitting about cats allegedly having 9
lives though...) Glenda is nice, but towards the end I felt the need to
consciously break with it as a design element and do something fresh
(which is were ``No Strings Attached'' came from). I think this is
one of the aesthetic triumphs of 9Front's stuff—Nietzsche would
approve.

I'm not sure I like the face either; though in context, is one is
_supposed_ to like it?

Ok, I give up; what is this quote attributed to Presotto? (I thought
I would find it on cat-v, but I'm not turning up anything...)

Its a dangerous game to start taking requests, but here's a spec
layout. Its certainly not the most elevated thing I've ever done, and
still needs some work; but the clean modernist design is meant to
counterpoint the crudity.

Humor of this sort walks a _very fine line_; and we should decide
whether we really want something like this before the world or whether
glorying in this sentiment is just self-indulgent.

No.
I think that's all the push my teetering creative conscience needed.
I've exercised authorial perogative and sent it to the bit-bucket.

This is not a dog I really wish to feed.
